Conscious Cinema 2023 - Long Beach

Conscious Cinema is a free, public Black-centered social justice film series and dialogue initiative in Long Beach. Film screenings, hosted in locations across the city, will promote dialogue with a diverse audience around social justice issues through stories and lessons from the past, connecting them to movement building and community organizing happening today. Through the arts, using film as a tool for inspiration, participants will connect to one another as a community, explore a greater understanding around the issues as they continue to exist today, and be introduced to ways they can take part in local social change opportunities. Each event will close with a discussion about how the film relates to community engagement and current challenges that Long Beach faces in the present day and time. Lead partners include Hannibal Media Group and Long Beach Forward.

Conscious Cinema is intended for a diverse, intergenerational audience, recommended for audiences ages 16 and older, due to mature content (language and violence) recorded during the civil rights movement. Film screening locations are wheelchair accessible.

The following three films have been selected for the Summer 2023 series:

• Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power - Thursday 8/31, 5:30pm-8pm at Expo Arts Center, 4321 Atlantic Ave., Long Beach 90807
• The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 - Thursday 9/14, 5:30pm-8pm at Grey Long Beach, 237 Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach 90802
• The Big Payback - Saturday, 11/18, 2pm-4:30pm at Martin Luther King Park, 1950 Lemon Ave. Long Beach 90806
